IFS Therapy for Menopause and Perimenopause
Compassionate support through the emotional and psychological changes of menopause.
Understanding Menopause Through IFS Therapy
Menopause and perimenopause are natural stages of life, but that doesn’t mean they always feel easy. Alongside physical symptoms, many women experience anxiety, low mood, brain fog, irritability, overwhelm or a sense that they no longer feel like themselves.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy understands these changes in a different way. Most women arrive at menopause with parts that have been working hard for decades: the capable part, the people-pleasing part, the strong part that holds everything together and the part that keeps everyone else happy and pushes through no matter what. These parts have often shaped a woman’s identity for much of her adult life.
During menopause, these parts may find it harder to keep going in the same way. Brain fog can challenge the part that prides itself on being organised and capable. Emotional changes can overwhelm the part that has always stayed calm, while exhaustion can make it difficult for the part that believes it must keep everyone else afloat.
What can feel like a loss of control is often your system signalling that old ways of coping are no longer working. The parts that have carried so much for so long may finally be asking for attention, support and change.
How IFS Therapy for Menopause and Perimenopause Can Help
IFS supports you in developing a more compassionate relationship with the parts that have carried so much for so long. Rather than pushing through, we explore what these parts need and what beliefs they may be holding.
Therapy can help you:
• Reduce anxiety and emotional overwhelm
• Understand feelings of anger, frustration or rage.
• Process grief and identity changes.
• Strengthen boundaries.
• Reconnect with your needs and priorities.
• Move through this transition with greater confidence and self-trust.
Menopause is not simply something to get through. It can also be an opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with yourself and create a life that feels more aligned with who you are now.
Menopause and South Asian Women
For many South Asian women, menopause can bring unique emotional and cultural challenges.
Although conversations around menopause are growing, it often remains a topic that is rarely discussed openly within South Asian families and communities. Many women receive little information about what to expect and may feel pressure to simply “get on with it,” as previous generations appeared to do.
At the same time, women are often balancing work, family responsibilities, caring for others and cultural expectations, leaving little space to focus on their own wellbeing. Symptoms can be dismissed as simply part of ageing, leading many women to feel isolated and unsupported.
IFS therapy offers a warm, culturally sensitive space to explore both the emotional impact of menopause and the pressures that may shape your experience. Together, we’ll understand the parts of you that have spent years putting others first, helping you reconnect with your own needs with greater compassion, confidence and self-trust.
